My Thailand Photography Adventure

Photography has always been in one way or another an adventure for me since way back when I found my father’s old Kodak Pony camera along with his slides from the Korean War. I also remember exploring the junk in great-grandmother’s basement and finding an old box of National Geographic magazines. In back of these magazines there was always a short article about the photographers who shot the pictures. So, just like his dad and these National Geographic photographers, I too wanted to travel to far away places and shoot pictures. I wanted to have my own adventures and it just so happens, I chose to come to Thailand.

Gothic Hong Kong

In May of 2006 I had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong as part another photography assignment. While I was there, I was able to photograph this ‘Gothic Hong Kong’ scene. For three nights I photographed this scene despite the adverse weather conditions. Most of the time it was either too rainy or too foggy. On the third and final night in Hong Kong, the cruise ship launched late and I was able to capture this magical moment. A combination of skill, determination, and good luck that allowed for this shot to be pulled off.

Now, having shot this picture, after only three days in Hong Kong, I would love to go back and shoot more of this city and of course China. This photograph is only the ‘tip of the iceberg’ photography-wise in China.

Photography Genealogy and Thanks

I believe in a photographer’s genealogy. For an example, my friend Ernie Rodriquez was a student of Jay Maisel, a famous photographer known for stunning color photography. My friend Lynn Radeka was a student of Ansel Adams, the late great black-and-white landscape photographer. From each of them, I listened to their experiences and learned from their successes. My friend Don Dormeyer was a student of many of the great photographers of New York. I feel that there is piece of each of them and others in my photographic work having picked up at the very least a little knowledge and skill from each of them along the way.

So in closing, I want to give thanks to all the photographers I had the pleasure of meeting and working over the years.
